The dentists at Gallery 57 Dental believe in providing New York, NY, patients with solutions that meet their needs. When damage has occurred to a natural tooth, either as an injury to the mouth or from an extremely large cavity, you must talk to our team about restorative treatments. Dental crowns are a popular way of protecting and strengthening a tooth and continue to be a reliable and highly-recommended solution from our team. Unlike other dental practices in the community, we are pleased to offer same-day dentistry thanks to the CEREC technology available in our office.
What is the CEREC device, and how does it work?
The CEREC device is a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system used to create dental crowns, veneers, inlays, and onlays. The system consists of three different components: a computer, a milling machine, and a scanner. It creates restorations while patients wait, eliminating the common practice of requiring multiple appointments to complete and place dental crowns.
What are the steps involved in same-day dentistry?
- The first step in the process is to scan the tooth that needs to be repaired. This is done with an intraoral camera that takes pictures of the tooth from all angles. These pictures are then uploaded to the computer, where they are then converted into a 3D model.
- Next, the dentist will use the computer to design the restoration. Once the design is complete, it is sent to the milling machine, which will carve the restoration out of a block of ceramic material.
- The last step is to place the restoration on the tooth and bond it in place. This can be done in one appointment, which is why CEREC is sometimes referred to as same-day dentistry.
