Get Your Perfect Smile: Everything You Need to Know About Prosthodontic Care During National Prosthodontist Awareness Week

This week is National Prosthodontists Awareness Week! National Prosthodontics Awareness Week (NPAW) is a yearly initiative from the American College of  Prosthodontics (ACP) to spread the word about the speciality and remind patients and referring doctors what sets us apart. Gallery57Dental’s very own Dr. Samantha Rawdin is the current chair of the NPAW committee for the American College of Prosthodontists and here she shares some insight into the types of patients who would benefit from prosthodontic care:
Prosthodontists undergo an additional 3 years of training after dental school to specialize in complex restoration and rehabilitation of broken, missing or malformed teeth. We are taught to look at the big picture and can treat everything from fillings and crowns to comprehensive full mouth rehabilitations and smile makeovers. Oftentimes, patients with specific presentations aren’t even aware of the advantages that seeing a prosthodontist can have– or let alone that our speciality even exists! This NPAW, I helped put together a campaign through the ACP to highlight the types of patients that would benefit from treatment by a prosthodontist.

Accidents happen! If you are involved in an accident that results in damage to your teeth, a prosthodontist should be involved to restore your smile from the start of treatment. Prosthodontists can work with medical professionals to treat damage due to accidents, creating the most efficient and effective treatment plans possible. #NPAW2023 #Prosthodontics

Everyone’s teeth can and will sustain wear and tear due to years of everyday use. Other causes of wear include grinding, acid erosion, clenching, and other harmful habits from day-to-day life. A prosthodontist can help reconstruct your smile and restore confidence that may be lost from damaged teeth. #NPAW2023 #Prosthodontics

Your teeth can be affected by congenital conditions such as ectodermal dysplasia, oligodontia, or cleft lip and palate, which can lead to a variety of complex dental issues. Prosthodontists often lead a team of dental specialists to manage treatment of patients with these conditions. #NPAW2023 #Prosthodontics

Prosthodontists help prepare the oral cavity ahead of surgery for head and neck cancer. They can also restore teeth that may have been removed or experienced decay during cancer treatment. Visiting a prosthodontist at the beginning of treatment for head and neck cancer can help improve outcomes for teeth and increase treatment options after surgery. #NPAW2023 #Prosthodontics

There are an estimated 120 million people in the United States that are missing at least one tooth. Missing even one tooth can impact confidence, job prospects, and overall health. Prosthodontists are the specialists for restoring smiles with dental implants, bridges, dentures, and other prosthetic solutions! #NPAW2023 #Prosthodontics

Most complex esthetic procedures, like veneers and implants, need to be incorporated in a comprehensive treatment plan to achieve the best possible result. A prosthodontist is trained to coordinate all elements of treatment needed to achieve the best restoration possible. #NPAW2023 #Prosthodontics
