“Do I Need To Replace My Silver Fillings?”

By: Dr. Samantha Rawdin

Patients often ask us, “Do I need to replace my silver fillings?” There’s no easy answer, but we consider several factors when deciding how to manage these fillings.

First, let’s clarify what “silver fillings” are. The correct term is “amalgam.” It’s a metal mixture that was popular for decades but has given way to tooth-colored fillings. While amalgam contains mercury, it only poses a risk when placed or removed. We don’t use amalgam, but we follow safety protocols during removal.

Here are reasons to replace amalgam fillings:

  1. Decay: If a cavity develops under the filling, we need to replace it.
  2. Tooth fracture: Amalgam expands and contracts differently than teeth, sometimes causing cracks.
  3. Amalgam breakdown: The filling might chip or pull away from the tooth.
  4. Appearance: If the filling is visible or discolors the tooth, patients often prefer a replacement.

Depending on the tooth’s condition, we might use a white filling, inlay, onlay, or crown. In severe cases, a root canal or even extraction might be necessary. Regular check-ups help prevent these issues.

If your amalgam filling is healthy, it can stay. But if you’re concerned, schedule a consultation to discuss your options.
