Here’s a first, a dentist recommending a huge lump of sugar for our enjoyment. We are talking about a sculpture made of sugar that Dr. Julie Hassid of Gallery 57 Dental recently viewed at an art show. The exhibit is called “The Subtlety”, also known as “The Marvelous Sugar Baby,” by artist Kara Walker and is being shown at the Domino Sugar Factory.
The sculpture is of a white woman with African features posed to resemble a 35-foot high sphinx covered in sugar. An entourage of life-size boys cast in molasses attends her. The not so subtle piece is seventy-five and a half feet long and thirty five and a half feet high.
This exhibit is billed as “Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant.”
Make sure to catch this amazing, free exhibit, which runs through July 6th. And enjoy the unique opportunity to indulge in a mountain of sugar; no flossing or brushing required.
