There has been renewed concern reported about Colgate Total toothpaste, which contains an anti-bacterial agent called Triclosan.
Some companies are removing it from their consumer products and Minnesota has banned it in various products. Colgate has many studies which have been submitted to the FDA which show it to be safe.
Patients who are concerned should switch to another toothpaste. The main benefits of toothpaste are a mild abrasive additive to remove plaque and fluoride that strengthens the tooth. When proper home care ,(brushing and flossing), are practiced, there is minimal additional benefit to anti-bacterial agents. ADA approved toothpastes are tested to show that they are not excessively abrasive and that they contain active fluoride.
